Fortieth Birthday Post #1: The End is the Beginning, the Beginning is the End

To the casual reader, this is the first post in the 40th Birthday Series.

But this is the final one.

You can read them start to finish, or go to the end and read backwards to here.

Final thoughts on 40.

I have always thought of 40 as the age my mother was in 1980. That was the year I was bar mitzvah'ed. It was the year John Lennon was murdered.

So I am now the age that my mother was when I entered my teens. That, to me, is the significance of this landmark. It is as if I have finally crossed over the great divide. That's the only way I can express it.

Farewell, Thirties. Hello, the Rest of My Life.

Fortieth Birthday Post #2: The Penultimate Birthday Post

Things I've learned today:

Type the word "fortieth" enough times and it begins to look really, really
weird.

Not many words rhyme with "forty".

The African Grey parrot at the Petland in Chelsea sells for $1400.

There are more small dogs running around Chelsea at night than there are
small children.

Burgers & Cupcakes twice-fried french fries are cooked in peanut oil.

At some point, 39 posts in one day is a hell of a lot.

Birthdays are quite pleasant when the temperature remains in the 70's.

The combination of Hawaiian punch and cupcakes really wires my children. But when they crash, they crash hard.

Forty is Sporty (Lordy!)

Fortieth Birthday Post #3: Pixar Has Gone To Far

Well, the advertising geniuses at Pixar really outdid themselves.

The frightened rat under the bench at the 23rd Street subway station was a nice touch! The sight of him running down the platform really had me in stitches.

Fortieth Birthday Post #4: Dinner at, You Guessed It, Burgers & Cupcakes!

Delicious dinner at Burgers & Cupcakes!

I had the Lamb with Rosemary Burger topped with Goat Cheese on a whole
wheat bun.

Melanie had the portobello burger with goat cheese and avocado over salad.

Jolee and Shayna had regular burgers (Shayna had mozzarella cheese on
hers).

For dessert, we all had cupcakes. Melanie and I shared a espresso mocha
latte cupcake. Jolee had the fairy cupcakes and Shayna had the cinnamon
swirl cupcake.

Shayna's cupcake is not pictured. Sorry.

Yum!

Fortieth Birthday Post #5: New York Minute (Manhattan Bridge at Sunset)

The sun was setting behind the buildings as we traversed the Manhattan Bridge. Thus was born another in my "New York Minute" series.

Fortieth Birthday Post #6: Out Stealing Horses

When the Papercuts blog first appeared, I gobbled it up. BillyBlog readers benefited/suffered as a result.

It was on said web log that I first saw mention of Per Petterson's Out Stealing Horses, which had just won an international fiction prize and was relatively unheralded here in the States.

I quickly reserved a copy at the library and grabbed the book when it arrived.

It's a wonderful story set in the twilight of an aging Norwegian man's life. The protagonist, Trond, moves back and forth between three periods of time. The present finds an older narrator struggling to adapt to a life of isolation on the Swedish-Norwegian border.

He flashes back to an earlier time when, when he was 15, and just becoming a man. A series of events involving timber, a tragic accident, and a boyhood escapade, weave together to form a tapestry of a life on the tipping point.

Through a neighbor, Trond also learns of his father's involvement in the Resistance during World War II. All three storylines come together to form a riveting tale, wonderfully narrated and described beautifully. The Norwegian countryside is a character in itself.

I'm posting this as part of my birthday series because I just finished the book yesterday and am carrying one of his earlier novels with me now, the novel In the Wake.

So it seems fitting, no?

This novel really deserves more than what I have given it here, so do check it out.

Fortieth Birthday Post #7: On the R Train

Taking the train into Manhattan. Later tonight, as if by magic, a picture
or two of me and my girls on the subway will show up on this post.

Fortieth Birthday Post #8: Headed to Dinner

And away we go:

Fortieth Birthday Post #9: Slipped Into Something More Comfortable (and More Fitting)

I just threw on my Dr. Madd Vibe t-shirt. Nice message and fitting for today.....

Fortieth Birthday Post #10: Shayna's Secret

This really has nothing to do with my turning forty, but I've been meaning to drop it here, but haven't.

One night last week, Melanie was tucking Shayna into bed and asked her, "Shayna, tell me a secret."

Shayna replied, without missing a beat:

"I send my underwear to the dry cleaners."

Melanie left the room laughing.

"What's so funny?" I asked.

Choking back tears, Melanie told me to ask Shayna to tell me a secret.

I did and got the same answer: a chuckle and "I send my underwear to the dry cleaners."

We got some mileage about that story and subsequently leaned that she had lifted the line from an episode of Disney's TV show "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody".

Still, I smile when I think about it.

Fortieth Birthday Post #11: The Other Songs (YouTube edition)

Here are the other songs I didn't get to post today in honor of the birthday:

"40,000 Headmen" by Traffic

"40 Feet" by Franz Ferdinand

And

"40 Boys in 40 Nights" by the Donnas.

Fortieth Birthday Post #12: Last Age-Approrpiate Music Post for the Birthday

Listen: "40" (mp3) by U2 from Under a Blood Red Sky

Read about "40" here.

Like all mp3s on this site, they are posted for a limited time only and are for promotional purposes only. Tracks will be removed at the request of the artists, their lawyers, and especially if the aforementioned use scary legal words that threaten me. I'm just a tiny blogger, guys.

Fortieth Birthday Post #13: Burning a Post for the Hell of It

Well, this little birthday experiment seems to be going well. This will mean 28 down, 12 to go. I have had many good tidings from friends and family alike today, which is nice, and only a couple of major issues at work to deal with. Fortunately, I was out when the police showed up to respond to a 911 call one of our employees apparently/allegedly made unwittingly.

I didn't think I could muster up and assemble 40 posts in one day, but with only a dozen remaining (after this one). It seems quite feasible, although y'all may see some liveblogging birthday posts between now and the end of the evening. Hopefully I've kept you entertained, or will be entertaining you in the moments to come, depending on your perspective.

Fortieth Birthday Post #14: A Most Excellent Gift!

Thanks to Sheri for this one:Offical CBGB site here.

Fortieth Birthday Post #17: Disclaimer to My Employer

Ok, Employer, Chill Out. Most (if not all) of these posts were composed during non-working hours. My record shows I had a day off yesterday. And my posts all are time-stamped prior to the start of my workday, or will be after. Ok?

Please, please, don't report me to Human Resources. The guy who runs that department, despite being devastatingly handsome, is OLD!

Fortieth Birthday Post #18: The Best Day to Celebrate a Birthday is July 3

Here is my argument as to why July 3 is the best day to have as a birthday.

So there are only three days in the calendar year when you are guaranteed that the day after your birthday is a holiday. This is important because who wants to celebrate one's birthday worrying about when one has to get up for work the next morning?

The three days are today, December 24, and December 31.

Most people with Christmas Eve birthdays acknowledge that they get gypped on gifts, or get the combined holiday/birthday gift. And no one wants to sing "Happy Birthday," they're all singing carols. It's never about you, it's about "the season".

The other day is New Year's Eve, December 31. Sure, EVERYBODY'S partying. But if you're single, what pressure! Not only do you have the pressure to get a date on New Year's Eve, but also pressure to get a date for your birthday. Your birthday is an afterthought.

Plus, you run the risk of confusing people. Wait, do we start celebrating your birthday after the ball drops, or before?

And, your chances of stepping in someone else's vomit greatly increase on New Year's Eve, and that ruins any birthday.

So, July 3rd is the winner. Best birthday. No work tomorrow, and maybe, if you're lucky, you get some fireworks as well.

Oh, and no one has ever frozen to death on July 3rd. Christmas Eve and New Years Eve have much greater risks.

Fortieth Birthday Post #19: Forty Ways to Alienate the Older Generation

Listen: Forty Ways (mp3) by Static-X from the album Cannibal

Now that's an album cover to make a mother proud.

I'd share the lyrics, but my kids may read this blog some day.

Like all mp3s on this site, they are posted for a limited time only and are for promotional purposes only. Tracks will be removed at the request of the artists, their lawyers, and especially if the aforementioned use scary legal words that threaten me. I'm just a tiny blogger, guys.

Forthieth Birthday Post #20: Other Reasons to Celebrate Today

According to the various online greeting cards shysters, today is cause for celebration for other reasons.

Apparently, it's also

Admission Day in Idaho

Air Conditioning Day

Chocolate Wafer Day

Compliment Your Mirror Day

and perhaps most appropriately,

Eat Beans Day.

So if you don't want to celebrate my birthday today, just turn on your air conditioner, have some chocolate wafers, bake some beans and smother them over an Idaho potato, then tell your mirror it looks fabulous.
